Ally McCoist has acknowledged that he will be lounging on the couch to watch Rangers’ Europa League matches against Manchester United and Tottenham.
The Ibrox hero acknowledged that the team is playing fantastic games, with Ange Postecoglou’s comeback to Glasgow probably taking centre stage.
On September 19, Alan Brazil said live on talkSPORT that he had only recently realised Rangers will be playing the two English teams.
Then, McCoist said, “They’re brilliant games,” with a mixture of terror and delight.
“The way things are going right now, I’ll be watching those two from behind the couch. You just couldn’t dream things up—big Ange returning to Ibrox and then unavoidably visiting Old Trafford.”
Rangers are not prepared to play Tottenham and Manchester United.
As they presently sit third in the Scottish Premiership, Philippe Clement and his team’s season hasn’t gone nearly as planned.
Over the past few years, it seems like everything has been in continual flux, and things don’t seem to be getting any easier with the recent resignation of chairman John Bennett [The Athletic, September 14].
The fact that Hearts managed a dismal draw and Celtic lost 3-0 indicates that, unless things improve rapidly, these Europa League matches may be too much to bear.
After Rangers’ 1-0 victory over Dundee United on September 15, there is some hope now, but as McCoist pointed out, given the current state of affairs, the two English giants might be too good for Rangers to handle.
Even if there were a lot of new arrivals at Ibrox, including team members like Danilo and Rabbi Matondo who will be out for some time [Chris Jack, September 5], the low number of players is concerning as these games approach.
