CoventryLive brings you news on Coventry City, including Sky Blues manager Mark Robins’ delight over his summer signing. Bassette Norman
Norman Bassette is without a doubt one of Coventry City’s most exciting possibilities going forward, as evidenced by his electrifying display against Tottenham on Wednesday night.
Even though he is still only 19 years old, the Belgian centre forward displayed confidence beyond his years. His quickness, opportunities on goal, and helper Brandon Thomas-Asante give the Sky Blues the lead. These things gave manager Mark Robins a lot to think about before Saturday’s matchup with Swansea City at CBS Arena.
In midweek, Bassette started ahead of Ellis Simms, leading the line and creating a tonne of issues for Spurs when trailing. In the fantastic cup tie atmosphere, he turned to the crowd and encouraged them to make even more noise when he didn’t have them standing.
In response to the question of whether he should exercise caution with such a gifted child and not push him too hard or too soon, Robins told CoventryLive, “I think that he is a lot older than his years.” He’s 19 years of age and you’d never know it. And he has an extremely optimistic attitude. He’s another lively character, and once he starts talking in English, I mean, he speaks it pretty damn well.
“He stated that although his English is not the best, he is still extremely good. He is receiving instruction. He wasn’t very confident or eager to use his English when I first spoke to him. But then all of a sudden he was talking and doing perfectly.
What’s wrong with your English, I asked him? He replied, “No, I’ll be fluent in three months.” And that’s just how he views the world. He has such a bright outlook. And he’ll be a terrific asset, a great player for us, for this club.”
“In terms of attributes, he’s got everything,” the manager replied when asked if he had ever seen a player as swift as him. Though we’ve only really seen glimpses of him thus far, he will be… In all honesty, I think he is a fantastic addition, thus I am thrilled to have him here.
Additionally, Robins disclosed that this week’s jokes about the striker were made by the players, but merely to highlight the young man’s excellent qualities.
“I asked the analysts to let the clip run a little bit because he had his shot saved by the custodian on Wednesday evening and he went to the crowd and started geeing them up,” the City manager added. “We were showing the players some clips from the Tottenham game.”
It simply revealed who he is, even though it made the other guys laugh and created some humour in the room. He’s a vibrant character who aspires to be the greatest and engage with everyone in the proper manner.
“His strength and character appeal to me. In addition, he is demanding for a 19-year-old, and he is aware of where and what he wants the ball. I felt that he made a valuable contribution on Wednesday. The fact that his game has so many diverse facets is a plus.
