Frank delivers verdict on Vicario handball decision in Brentford loss

Although Vicario seemed to control the ball outside of his box, the referees chose not to award a free kick.

In Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Brentford, Thomas Frank maintained that he is positive Tottenham custodian Guglielmo Vicario handled the ball outside of his area. However, he had no problem receiving a yellow card for yelling for a free kick from his technical area.

In the second half, Vicario looked to touch the ball with his glove outside the penalty box, but neither referee John Brooks nor the VAR gave the Bees a free kick.

Play was continued despite Frank and defender Kristoffer Ajer receiving yellow cards for their altercations with Brooks. It was 2-1 against Brentford at the moment.

Frank remarked, “Not only looked,” in response to Vicario’s request that he looked outside his box. He had approached it unconventionally.

“The game was not defined by that incident. We have to play ninety minutes of solid play when we get here. We engaged in 60. There were a couple deflections and balls dropped that didn’t increase our chances of winning the game, so the margins needed to work in our favour.

It was an error. To us, it might have been a free-kick. It might have been beneficial to us. You never know, though. I estimate that there is a 0.0543 chance of scoring with a straight free kick. Therefore, not the greatest chance of scoring, probably.

In my opinion, John Brooks performed admirably throughout the game. He did an extremely nice job of handling soft fouls both ways.

Frank acknowledged that being scheduled was frustrating, but he said, “Yeah, but I understand how it is.”

“It’s simply our frustration, so we can’t be too — I hate to use the word aggressive, but — in-your-face. There is nothing we can do about it. Hey, get over it.
