‘Nightmare’ – National media claims Sunderland player is undergoing ‘ordeal’ on Wearside

In recent months, the Sunderland winger has had difficulty being recognised by the first squad.

The season has not gone well for Sunderland prospect Jewison Bennette thus far. The winger, who was formerly a consistent member of Wearside’s first team, has recently fallen out of favour at the senior level and has only made three appearances for the U21s since the start of the current season.

It was widely believed that he might have left the Stadium of Light during the summer on a loan basis, but no move happened, and now reports in his home country of Costa Rica are asking whether he needs a new start to jumpstart his career.

Bennette “lived a dream” when he joined for Sunderland from hometown club CS Herediano in 2022, according to an article on the 20-year-old from Fútbol Centroamérica, but the dream has since transformed into a “real nightmare.” According to reports, his decline in the rankings is “really worrying” for Costa Rican football as a whole, as he is regarded as the team’s next big international potential, as well as a problem for the player personally.

In fact, Fútbol Centroamérica continues by implying that Bennette is “extending his ordeal” by remaining at Sunderland and that he needs to persuade Regis Le Bris of his value or else he will be put to the test between now and the end of his contract in 2026.

The Sunderland head coach, for his part, has talked about Bennette’s predicament in recent weeks and seems to have alluded to the prospect of a January loan departure. “It’s difficult because we felt that he needed senior football, and of course with the U21s he is still playing youth football,” Le Bris said in a statement earlier this month.

“However, he can practise with the senior team and play this kind of game, so we’ll see in four months.” We can attempt to watch him play left back; it will still be beneficial to his experiences and growth. Though I don’t think it’s his role, he can still learn in these kinds of activities.
