Arsenal defeated Leicester City 4-2 on Saturday at the Emirates Stadium, but there were some controversial calls made during the match.
After the Foxes’ 4-2 loss to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday, Alan Shearer called the decision made by referee Sam Barrott to not dismiss Riccardo Calafiori for his “deliberate trip” on Leicester City player Facundo Buonanotte “awful.”
Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli gave their hosts a two-goal lead in the first half, but James Justin’s brace in the second half pulled Leicester back to tie the score. Referee Barrott had to make a call during a City onslaught when Calafiori, who had already received a booking, halted Brighton loanee Buonanotte in his tracks. The play was evenly balanced at that point.
These calls were not answered by Arsenal, who have recently seen Declan Rice and Trossard sent off. In fact, Buonanotte received a card for begging the referee to give Italian summer signing Calafiori the boot. To Steve Cooper’s dismay, the Gunners went on to make a late breakthrough in stoppage time and win all three points.
Shearer, a former striker for Newcastle and England, felt sorry for City because they were the victim of what he called a “terrible” decision by the referee to not penalise Calafiori for what was clearly a bookable violation.
Premier League Productions was informed by Shearer, “I think that’s an awful decision.” “Calafiori’s leg is visibly sticking out. This is a planned journey. That should be a yellow card. Indeed. It’s a crucial moment in the game. Buonanotte, instead, receives a yellow card, adding insult to injury. He’s putting out his leg, see? This is a planned journey. That is a yellow card all day.”
