After a turbulent summer transfer window, Rangers have plenty to be happy about.
The pay bill for the Ibrox side dropped by as much as £10 million annually as a result of 16 players leaving the team and 11 joining Rangers.
Despite the difficulties posed by a tight transfer budget and behind-the-scenes scheming, Philippe Clement has praised the Rangers recruitment team for their excellent performance during the window.
But could Rangers make a comeback for a long-term target who has been candidly discussing his future over the weekend, given interim chairman John Gilligan’s promise to provide extra transfer funds come January?
Morgan Whittaker wants to get “higher level.”
It’s simple to believe that Morgan Whittaker may have had his eye on current team Plymouth Argyle given his frequent connections to the Rangers.
After the Championship team was promoted to the English second division last summer, Whittaker set a club record by joining for £1 million. Serie A powerhouse Lazio has also expressed interest in the player.
The winger, nevertheless, maintains that he is not bothered by rumours that he would leave Plymouth and join Rangers in particular.
This is due to Whittaker’s contentment at Plymouth, despite his openness to the prospect of competing at a higher level.
Whittaker, cited by the Daily Record, stated, “I know how to handle it because I have been in this situation before. I found ways it worked for me, and that’s just focussing on what I can do.”
“I believe that knowing I was going to play here made a difference from when I was at Swansea.”
“In my eyes it was a win-win because I love it here and I’m playing all the time, and if I got the chance to move it would be to the higher level I want to be getting to. It wasn’t an awful situation to be in, in my opinion.
In January, when the Rangers resume their massive squad makeover, we anticipate Morgan Whittaker to be the main topic of discussion once more.
Rangers have reportedly attempted and failed twice in the young attacker’s career to sign the 23-year-old, dynamic attacking potential.
Rangers will receive a transfer boost as they look for a left-winger.
Rangers made an attempt to sign Whittaker in January 2022; the attacker later returned to Swansea City following a fruitful loan at Home Park.
Michael Beale, who was the Rangers manager at the time, attested to this.
However, rumours surfaced this summer that Rangers was prepared to revive their interest in Morgan Whittaker; some even claimed the Gers had submitted a £7 million deal.
A deal never happened because the Pilgrims were demanding more than £10 million, and Rangers’ Champions League exit may have had a ripple effect.
In the Rangers’ pursuit of Senegalese forward Abdallah Sima, it most definitely did.
In the closing seconds of the transfer window, Rangers also saw a last-minute loan agreement for Southampton winger Sam Edozie fall through, leaving the team short-handed at left-wing.
Whittaker’s most recent transfer remarks are particularly fascinating to read, especially in light of John Gilligan’s suggestion that Clement would have enough of money to spend given the team’s “solid” financial standing.
We anticipate that the Rangers will bolster this region in January, and since funding will be available, this is a scenario worth monitoring this winter.
