‘Hats off to him’ – Sunderland boss hails ‘really disappointed’ first team outcast after U21s win vs Lyon

On Tuesday night, Jewison Bennette made an appearance for the Sunderland U21s.

Graeme Murty, the coach of Sunderland U21s, praised Jewison Bennette’s mentality after the Costa Rican winger played the entire 90 minutes in Tuesday’s 2-0 victory over Lyon.

With a decisive brace late in the game, young striker Trey Ogunsuyi of the Black Cats defeated his French opponents to claim their first Premier League International Cup victory. Bennette, for his part, was unlucky not to find the scoresheet himself as he saw two goals disallowed in the first half due to offside.

With just over ten minutes remaining in the match, the 20-year-old was switched from right wing to left back. Murty has showered his youngster with praise for the way he keeps up his work ethic for Sunderland’s youth squad.

After the last whistle, he told The Echo, “He’s great to work with.” He never moans. He is always willing to hear. He is also rather sad that both goals were disallowed because they might have been the game’s pivotal moments. Even though we ended up on the other side of them, he had to persevere, start over, and truly get back into the game.

“And then, as always, without complaint, Jenson [Jones] went on to play left-back for the team after getting hurt later on. Therein is the player’s responsibility to ensure he is prepared. In order to ensure that we maintain our consistency and receive a clean sheet, he must also make sure that he acts in the best interests of the squad. It’s not easy, therefore I give him props for being able to be so happy with his day’s job.

Murty’s remarks follow claims from Bennette’s home country of Costa Rica that his tenure at Wearside has become a “nightmare” and that the player’s continuous exclusion from the first team photo is a “ordeal.” With Bennette being considered as the next great thing in Costa Rican football, there seems to be fear in Central America that his lack of playing time could impede his growth and thus harm his national team.
