After his team defeated Bournemouth by three points, Leicester City’s manager said, “It’s clear I have work to do” to win everyone over to his side at the King Power Stadium.
A single victory does not define a season, and Steve Cooper is aware that more needs to be done to build Leicester City’s reputation and inspire people to believe in him.
On Saturday, City defeated Bournemouth 1-0 to record their first Premier League victory at seven attempts. Early on, Facundo Buonanotte scored the game-winning goal. The Cherries struck the woodwork twice and had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half, but City barely managed to hang on.
Cooper and City, who were under pressure following their first six performances and outcomes, are relieved with the outcome. Even though the crowd cheered at the conclusion, Cooper is aware that one win will not win them over completely.
When asked if his celebration after the game was more subdued than that of Nottingham Forest, Cooper replied, “I’ve got to build trust here.” It’s obvious that I still have a ways to go before people truly believe in me. I’m completely OK with that. That’s a known aspect of the work.
That’s my main source of motivation since it enables me to express how much I want to succeed in this project with this group of incredibly dedicated players. To be honest, I’ve been enjoying the environment here. Even though we’ve only won today, I had the impression that the crowd is truly rooting for the squad.
During the second half, we truly needed them. Whenever Bournemouth crossed out for a goal kick, the supporters would sometimes yell, “Come on, we can do this!” That gave us a great boost.
It’s fantastic to win, but I know that in order for myself and the squad to truly gel as a unit, become a force, and truly be the team we want to be, we still have a lot of work to do. To reach that point, I want to exhibit humility and stillness, but it will require a lot of work.
In many of City’s games this season, they have performed poorly in the first half before mounting a valiant comeback in the second. On Saturday, it was the exact opposite.
Cooper stated: “You have to give it your all on the field in order to win a Premier League game.” There are times when you must perform flawlessly in every aspect of the game. We felt we could harm opponents with our attacking moves in the first half, which put players in position according to the play model we’re attempting to build.
“I thought we did that when we got that right in the first half. We gained good positions and opened them up. We got off to a good start and could have scored one or two more goals. We were, in my opinion, very close to becoming an offensive team today. That is our desired state.
The strategy for the second half was to go get the second. At half-time, we showed them pictures and told them they could really harm Bournemouth if they got this placement correct. In the first half, there were moments when we just couldn’t seem to get it right and gave the ball away in inappropriate places. However, once we did get it correct, then
That was the second half’s strategy. Naturally, though, Bournemouth was putting more players up the pitch and moving faster and longer because they were attempting to win the game for the first time. You have to match the numbers. It comes naturally to us. You are sprinting back because you don’t want balls to fly over your head. As a result, we didn’t finish where we had hoped.
However, we performed incredibly well on the defensive end of the game. We demonstrated the complexity of our tactical defence concepts in addition to our heart, soul, and determination to protect. We did a good job of reading the game and covering each other.
In the second half of the game, we attempted to take control. We didn’t plan to strike on the counter, but that’s how our attacks happened. However, I thought that overall, we handled that effectively and played well enough to keep a clean sheet.
