One of Chris Rigg’s former coaches has appropriately praised the Sunderland star.
The Black Cats’ 2024–25 Championship campaign has gotten off to an incredible start.
In contrast to the later part of the 2023–24 Championship season, the team is incredibly confident in one another, especially the younger players, and new French coach Regis Le Bris is obviously successful in getting the best performance out of them.
The current Sunderland team has excelled especially in the centre of the park, where Chris Rigg and Jobe Bellingham have both shown tremendous growth this year and are even considered future England players.
Although a number of Sunderland’s youth players have excelled this season, Rigg in particular has earned recognition for being “cool and calm,” and given his impact on the team thus far, it is not surprising.
Chris Rigg, a Sunderland gem, is lauded by his former coach.
Rigg, who is 17 years old, is still surprising everyone every week. He has scored two goals in the league so far at the Stadium of Light against Leeds United and Middlesbrough.
Unsurprisingly, one of his former coaches has praised the young player. Steven Richardson, the former futsal coach for Hebburn Town, spoke highly of the player and said he was always destined for greatness.
Per The Chronicle, Richardson said: “He’s so cool and calm in the house. It is not a terrible thing that he is aware of his excellence. He is aware that he will give it everything he has, no less, when he makes that pitch. He is aware that his skill will benefit him as well.
With a player like that, Sunderland truly has a gem. He will never give up trying. He will never stop giving until he is unable to give any more. As I mentioned earlier, he’s like a Duracell bunny but he’s also controlled with it. He could definitely play for 100 to 180 minutes.
“He’ll carry out his duties and play his part. Furthermore, he is fully aware of what each and every other person ought to be doing.
The midfield player has established himself as a regular in the Sunderland team for good cause, and when the January transfer window opens, his skills will surely make him a coveted commodity.
Chris Rigg’s mindset will propel him to the top
Many players possess the attributes that Rigg possessed in his early years, but his mindset at the age of 17 is what makes him separate out from the competition.
There are no shocks to see him praised for the fact that ‘he’s going to offer everything he’s got’ when on the pitch, and that comes with how he has controlled expectations for himself, something that takes lots of self awareness, which is far from certain with a player at that age.
In his 12th season of elite football, Rigg plays with the poise of an experienced professional, and if he keeps going in this direction, he will reach the pinnacle of the sport.
His skills currently put him apart from the competition, but he will only flourish in that environment because he has demonstrated that he already possesses the skills necessary to make an impact on a top championship team. Many players his age falter when faced with the high expectations placed on them.
