Given that Steven Gerrard is eager to make a transfer, Joe Lewis has spoken out about being wanted by Rangers.
According to the former Aberdeen goalie, Pittodrie authorities contacted the Ibrox club in 2019 regarding a transfer swoop.
Gerrard was eager to sign the goalie after Lewis showed promise in a 2-0 loss to Rangers, but the goalie refused to abandon Aberdeen.
Lewis, who is currently 37, has revealed that he had already verbally committed to a new contract with Aberdeen after reaching the last year of his current one.
Lewis also fulfilled his Aberdeen contract agreement, even if he was flattered by the interest in taking him to Ibrox.
“We played Rangers away and we lost 2-0 at Ibrox,” the goalie told the Daily Record. I played a great game.
“After that game, Rangers got in touch with a couple people, so I knew they were interested. They realised I was in the final year of my contract after asking me a few questions.
“I wasn’t going to back out of the verbal agreement I had made with Aberdeen to extend. Even though Rangers is a large club, I wouldn’t have felt at ease travelling from Aberdeen to play there.
“I had verbally signed to a new contract with Aberdeen, and it wouldn’t have seemed right. I also didn’t want to damage my reputation at Aberdeen or break off my friendships with supporters and others.”
Lewis continued: “I’m sure the money would have been fantastic, and the interest was wonderful.
Derek, with whom I spoke, was also aware of Rangers’ interest. He got me in, and I signed my new Aberdeen contract the next day. At Aberdeen, I was content. I keep my promise.
