Hearts and Hibs security teams intervene after missiles and fighting at the Edinburgh derby

During Sunday’s game, there were physical altercations and items thrown from the stands.

After violence broke out and missiles were hurled from the stand during Sunday’s Edinburgh derby at Easter Road, Hearts and Hibs security staff are collaborating to find the guilty.

Among other things, security teams are communicating with the incident in which Hearts defender James Penrice was hit by an object that was thrown from an area of the stadium where Hibs supporters were present.

Unsavoury situations have plagued Derby matches in recent seasons, and both teams are keen to stop the violence from happening again. On Sunday, some Hearts supporters were seen fighting among themselves in the away end, in addition to Hibs supporters berating Penrice.

A lighter, a bottle opener, and a pie were among the several items thrown at Tynecastle skipper Lawrence Shankland during the derby game in Gorgie last season. A huge riot between players and coaches from both teams ensued after a Hearts supporter attacked Hibs defender Marijan Cabraja at Tynecastle in May 2023. In August 2022, Alex Cochrane was also hit by a lighter and several chips that Hibs supporters threw at him at Easter Road.

At Hibs vs. Hearts games, the corresponding hierarchies are committed to eliminating any disruptive players. In order to uncover film of anyone involved in throwing missiles into the pitch or engaging in any other type of supporter disturbance, stewards, police and security personnel are in discussions.
