In order to assist Port Vale win five straight games and go four points clear of the top of the League Two standings, Brandon Cover scored his second goal of the season.
Brandon Cover, a loanee from Leicester City, is thriving while playing for high-flying Port Vale.
Cover opened the scoring in Vale’s 3-2 victory over Wimbledon on Saturday with his second goal of the season from wing-back. Following their fifth consecutive victory, Darren Moore’s team now leads the League Two standings by four points.
Cover has had a significant impact as Vale’s first-choice right-sided wing-back, starting 10 of the 11 league games since joining from City on deadline day. Last month, he scored against Wimbledon and displayed more of his skills after getting off to a good start with a delicate chip.
The 21-year-old intercepted on the midway line, drove into space and communicated the necessary run to striker Jayden Stockley, who was ten years his older. After slipping a pass to Stockley in the box, he ran for the return ball and coolly found the bottom corner with his shot.
Rico Richards was able to flick in a cross for Stockley to head home for the third Vale goal after Cover slipped by the lines and into the box. Cover’s contributions to the goals and his overall play earned him a spot on the League Two team of the weekend.
However, his goals as a wing-back do not always include playing at the top end. He has demonstrated many more attributes, though, and now leads the division in consecutive tackles per ninety minutes.
One of Cover’s main advantages when playing for City’s Under-21 team as a full-back or defensive midfielder was his combativeness, which he appears to have maintained even after moving up to the senior level. Manager Moore mentioned last month that Cover did not give his rival winger “a moment’s peace.”
