How Sir Alex Ferguson’s trip to Celtic Park may have proved final straw for Erik ten Hag

The legendary Scot skipped the next game at Old Trafford to watch Celtic vs. Aberdeen after supporters exclaimed, “I can’t believe we sacked Fergie before ten Hag.”

Following Sunday’s 2-1 loss to West Ham and with the English powerhouses sagging in 14th place in the Premier League standings, Manchester United fired manager Erik ten Hag.

Only a few days after the club shocked everyone by announcing that Sir Alex Ferguson would resign from his lucrative role as worldwide ambassador, the Dutchman was fired. “I can’t believe we’ve sacked Fergie before ten Hag!” exclaimed supporters at the time.

Despite reportedly agreeing with the club’s new billionaire owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who is brutally cutting costs at Old Trafford, Sir Alex’s “sacking” was criticised by other Scottish football legends.

“I’m utterly floored by the decision to let Fergie go,” said Archie Macpherson, now 89, who called the action “no way to treat a legend.” Alex McLeish, meanwhile, also said he was shocked by the decision.

It was also noteworthy that Fergie, 82, did not show up for the next game against Brentford on Saturday, October 19, even though Sir Alex and Sir Jim are still reportedly on “amicable” terms.

Rather, he returned to Scotland to see Celtic vs. Aberdeen, the top-tier match, from the stands at Celtic Park. Prior to being hired by United, Sir Alex guided the Dons to their most successful era.

He reportedly had a “prior engagement” and had no plans to witness the Brentford game, where the Red Devils narrowly prevailed 2-1. And without a question, the best game was the thrilling 2-2 match in Glasgow’s East End.

Since retiring in 2013, Ferguson, who won 28 major trophies at Old Trafford, has served as the club’s global ambassador. However, in a cost-cutting measure, the position, which is reportedly paid £2.5 million year, will disappear at the conclusion of the season.
