Manchester United sack Erik ten Hag with interim coach named for Leicester City tie

Manchester United fired their manager following a dismal start to the season that saw them drop to just one spot and two points ahead of Steve Cooper’s team in the Premier League standings.

Erik ten Hag was fired by Manchester United prior to Leicester City’s matchup with the Red Devils in the Carabao Cup.

United has decided to let go of the Dutchman following a lacklustre start to the Premier League season and after experiencing issues the previous season as well. The club will be led by assistant manager Ruud van Nistelrooy, who will assume interim management, when City travels to Old Trafford on Wednesday night for their Carabao Cup fourth-round match.

United said in a statement: “Erik ten Hag is no longer the manager of Manchester United’s men’s first team. After being hired in April 2022, Erik guided the team to two domestic championships: the FA Cup in 2024 and the Carabao Cup in 2023.

“We wish Erik the best of luck in the future and appreciate everything he has done while he has been with us. While a permanent head coach is being sought, Ruud van Nistelrooy will serve as the team’s interim coach with assistance from the present coaching staff.

After Jarrod Bowen scored a penalty in injury time, United lost 2-1 to West Ham on Sunday, their fourth loss in nine Premier League games. Due to the outcome, United was only one spot and two points ahead of City in the standings, finishing in 14th place.

In addition to playing them on Wednesday night, Steve Cooper’s team also faces United in the Premier League soon. On Sunday, November 10, they return to Old Trafford for the last match before the November international break.
