Tyrique Stevenson has an inexcusable defense of Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary pass

Tyrique Stevenson, a second-year cornerback for the Chicago Bears, discovered the hard way that life in the NFL comes at you quickly after the team’s Week 8 loss against the Washington Commanders.

Naturally, Jayden Daniels’ Hail Mary touchdown pass, which gave the Commanders the victory, will be the talk of the town. There is, of course, no clear defence to have against a Hail Mary, but the Bears’ defensive setup on the game’s last play had a number of troubling details.

Fans quickly pointed out that the Bears still had timeouts left, of course. Matt Eberflus could have called a timeout to make sure everyone on defence was in agreement, rather than relying on the defence having enough time to set up properly for the defence of Daniels’ valiant efforts.

Stevenson might have had enough time to comprehend the seriousness of the situation if Eberflus had called a timeout. Instead, Stevenson was too occupied insulting Commanders fans to prepare for Daniels’ pass, and Eberflus hung onto the timeouts the Bears still possessed.

Tyrique Stevenson must answer to the Chicago Bears coaching staff.

The fact that it was Stevenson’s tip that allowed Noah Brown to easily collect the batted ball and give the Commanders the victory only serves to further shame Stevenson.

Stevenson’s whole performance against the Commanders is a criticism of the coaching staff, even before his pitiful display on the game’s last play. Stevenson’s personal foul earlier in the game was an indication that his emotions were getting the better of him.

Stevenson must answer for his actions. Though a benching against the Arizona Cardinals next week shouldn’t be out of the question, the Bears will not cut their second-year starting cornerback. Following the game, Stevenson did not talk to reporters.
