Following Rangers’ most recent defeat to Aberdeen, Alan Brazil suggested Ally McCoist as a possible successor to Philippe Clement as manager.
The former Aston Villa forward questioned whether McCoist would accept the position if offered and give up his several punditry duties when the talkSPORT host and frequent colleague of the Gers icon asked Gabby Agbonlahor live on the station on October 31.
Clement, 50, is under a lot of strain after his team lost 2-1 at Pittodrie the night before, dropping to third place after just ten games, nine points behind the Dons and Celtic.
Brazil enquired, “Do you believe Ally would accept the Rangers job offer and forgo all these other things that he works at his other twenty-two jobs? “I don’t think he would,” Agbonlahor retorted. However, do they require someone like Ally to enter and kick them?
“Well, he’s alive and kicking, isn’t he?” Brazil continued. Alan Brazil presented the Rangers legend live on talkSPORT. Since it isn’t anticipated to happen anytime soon, it is unclear at this time whether the Ibrox board is worried enough about Clement’s direction of travel to fire him [Rangers Review, October 31].
However, if they do, it appears to be a task beyond the capabilities of the Light Blues’ all-time top scorer, who has not had a managerial position since leaving the team almost ten years ago.
After leading the team up from the fourth division following liquidation, McCoist resigned in December 2014 when the team was still in the Scottish Championship. It seems improbable that a Rangers team plagued by problems both on and off the pitch is something He’d like to return there on foot.
There are concerns over whether the club can even consider a management change given the financial circumstances.
Due to possible terms in the new contract, it is believed that Clement’s departure will probably be less expensive than one might have anticipated for a coach who received an extension in the summer [PLZ Soccer, October 21].
However, finding a replacement would be difficult, particularly if they are currently in charge somewhere else. For example, there have been rumours that Derek McInnes of Kilmarnock would be considered if a change were to be made [PLZ Soccer, October 21].
Although McCoist is theoretically available, it is difficult to believe that a second term as Ibrox manager would be the best course of action for either the club or him.
