Records from betting agencies are anticipated to demonstrate that the controversial bet purportedly made by Gold Coast celebrity AJ Brimson was placed on his mother’s Sportsbet account.
An image that went viral on social media allegedly depicts Brimson winning a large wager on the Melbourne Cup adjacent to what looks to be a betting on a rugby league match is being looked into by the NRL. According to the game’s code of conduct, registered NRL players and other participants are not permitted to wager on rugby league matches.
According to the photograph, Brimson staked $100 on Knights Choice, the Melbourne Cup winner, for $101 in order to pocket $10,100. Below the wager, there is another somewhat concealed bet that looks to be on a rugby league market for “try-scorers.” Questions were raised over whether the message, which was removed, might have been posted during a rugby league game.
Jim Banaghan, Brimson’s agent, stated on Wednesday that the Titans player posted the joke on social media, which had obviously “backfired,” and did not actually place the wager.
The betting company where the wager was placed, Sportsbet, has a partnership with the NRL. It is anticipated that this association will support the governing body’s inquiry. According to sources who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still ongoing, Sportsbet’s records indicate that the wager was made using Brimson’s mother, Vanessa.
According to Banaghan, because Knight is her partner’s last name, Brimson’s mother had placed the $100 wager as an omen bet. In order to support their version of events, the veteran agent also said he had screenshots of a text discussion between Brimson and his mother.
“He copied it and posted it after she sent it [the winning wager],” Banaghan stated. “I have the entire exchange. It will be sent to the integrity unit, where it will be immediately struck in the skull.
They are required to try their utmost to determine whether something is inside if it appears suspicious.
“We’ll give them everything they need to prove that it was a bad giggle.”
“The Gold Coast Titans have referred a social media post made by AJ Brimson to the NRL’s integrity unit,” the team said in a statement. The club is currently unable to speak further on this issue.
Tim Simona, a centre for the Wests Tigers, was discovered to have placed bets on league games in 2017. Simona was consequently deregistered by the NRL for a number of infractions, including wagering on opponent players to score against his side and against his team winning.
