When the Blades win big, one on target
When Sheffield United defeated Bristol City in the Championship, teenage Scottish striker Ryan One became an unexpected hero for the Blades, leading to a spectacular comeback.
One, 18, replaced Sheffield United in the 69th minute when they were behind 1-0 at Ashton Gate. He then scored two goals in the closing minutes to secure a crucial victory and move up to second place in the Championship.
Only twenty minutes after taking Kieffer Moore’s place in the Sheff United front line, One made his first appearance of the season by climbing highest in the penalty box and looping a header home. Harrison Burrows gave Chris Wilder’s team the winning goal in the 98th minute, capitalising on Robert Dickie’s red card for the home team just moments before.
One, who began his career at Hamilton Accies before gaining a transfer to Bramall Lane in 2023, is the son of former Stranraer and Partick Thistle striker Armand. After making his senior debut in a 5-0 Premier League loss to Arsenal last November, he has subsequently been limited to playing youth football and the EFL Cup. His goal on Tuesday night will have done absolutely nothing to hurt his chances of getting more first-team exposure.
“We had been wanting to get Ryan One on the pitch and he took that opportunity,” Wilder said following the victory, which puts the Blades in the running for automatic promotion. I’m not sure why it took us the last 20 minutes to play with greater vigour and intensity, but you have to give the players a lot of credit.
One recently made his under-21 debut in last month’s Euro 2025 qualifying match against Belgium and is a member of the Scotland Under-19 squad.
Tommy Conway of Scotland scored a goal for Middlesbrough in their 4-1 victory over QPR on the road Tuesday night, and Ben Doak, a teammate and fellow international, also contributed an assist as Michael Carrick’s squad moved up to seventh place in the league.
