In midweek, Celtic entertained their supporters with a performance in the Champions League.
This was Brendan Rodgers’ team in full swing, and it was maybe one of the best performances you will ever witness from the Scottish champions.
Celtic’s victory over RB Leipzig was well-earned, especially considering that they were then second in the Bundesliga.
The Bhoys entertained the people inside Parkhead to win all three points, despite falling down by a goal.
Nicolas Kuhn’s incredible curling effort equalised the score, and just before halftime, the same player gave his club the lead with a close-range goal.
It all started when Reo Hatate won the ball back as Celtic pressed Leipzig in their own defensive third, and a few seconds later, Kuhn was wheeling away in joy.
As they talked, it appeared that David Moyes and Roy Keane were among the curious parties seeing the Bhoys.
After watching Celtic, David Moyes and Roy Keane talk about teams playing out from the back.
Although Roy Keane hasn’t managed a first team in a long time, David Moyes recently resigned from his position at West Ham United in the summer.
With teams insisting on playing out from the back nonetheless, it’s safe to conclude that the game has evolved significantly since Keane and Moyes began their managerial careers.
While highlighting and applauding Celtic’s “pressing” against Leipzig, Moyes clarified that playing out from the back may also depend on “the quality of the players” of the opposition.
However, Keane chose to focus on the bad, telling the Overlap that Leipzig’s attempt to beat players from the edge of their area just before halftime was “absolute madness.”
“Manchester City is excellent at it, so I don’t think anyone has an issue with them doing it,” Keane remarked. “However, you get caught when you see the other teams! Some teams are in on goal, but you clearly lose it high up the pitch. I have the problem.
“I adore it when teams are able to accomplish it. But the insanity for me. On Monday morning, you have to report as a staff member and say, “Lads, we lost again.” “Why do we keep playing out from the back when we are always getting caught and under pressure?” someone has to ask.
“A lot will depend on the quality of players,” Moyes continued. When I saw Celtic, I believed their players—many of whom were Japanese—were excellent at pressuring.
Keane went on to discuss how Celtic scored their second goal against Leipzig, saying, “Didn’t the opposition encourage them? My point would be that. Encouraged by the opponent gaining possession of the ball, they are throwing it away one minute before halftime. On the very edge of the box, they are attempting to defeat players. A goal is lost. It’s insane. Complete insanity.
Following their victory over RB Leipzig, Celtic’s Champions League ranking
Fans were worried when Celtic was losing to Borussia Dortmund by seven goals not too long ago.
However, with the players’ outstanding response to that awful performance, there is a glimmer of hope in the air now.
With a 15th-place finish, just two points behind sixth-place Barcelona and three points behind second-place Sporting Lisbon, Celtic is looking good in the Champions League standings.
Even better, they have games they can win coming up, starting with a match against Club Brugge at home following the international break and then travelling to Croatia to play Dinamo Zagreb.
