According to Steven Thompson, John Souttar was extraordinarily fortunate not to have played a part in Rangers’ “huge” first-half loss to Hearts.
At Ibrox on Sunday, Kenneth Vargas pounced on the center-back’s terrible backpass, but Jack Butland swiftly intervened to stop the attack.
In a match that the Gers won 1-0, former Rangers striker Thompson, who was broadcasting the match on BBC Sportsound on November 10, gave his immediate response to the incident.
“John Souttar made a really bad error there, a really short back pass. Vargas was on it, and I think he kind of bottles it a little bit when he sees Butland running out. He thinks he’s going to get caught, but he really needs to do something.
“That was a huge let-off for the Rangers.” Massive.
During Rangers vs. Hearts, John Souttar was a fortunate lad.
Rangers’ problem has been moments of blatant incompetence for the majority of the season, and Souttar was incredibly fortunate that his big mistake was not punished more severely.
Even though Hearts had a brief period of play after the goal, the Gers were comfortably ahead at that point in the game thanks to a goal from Cyriel Dessers.
Therefore, Souttar’s incomprehensible backpass had the potential to seriously harm the hosts and erase the progress they had made to take the lead.
In the end, Rangers prevailed, maintained the lead until halftime, and then continued to win the game to earn three points and cap off a successful few days for Philippe Clement and company after the intense Europa League tie at Olympiacos.
Even though they will require much more in the upcoming months, they can at least start the international break strong.
