Declan John, a Welsh international left-back who had a brief time at Rangers in 2017–18, will be remembered by Rangers supporters.
The Welsh team loaned the former Cardiff City left-back to Rangers, and he was so successful that the club decided to make the trade permanent six months later.
The arrival of Steven Gerrard to Rangers’ management marked the beginning of the defender’s demise, just a few months after Declan John signed that long-term contract.
However, after agreeing to a short-term contract with one of Rangers’ Scottish Premiership rivals, John may be returning to Ibrox this season. St. Mirren signs Declan John.
Declan John has agreed to a short-term contract with St. Mirren through January in response to defender Jaden Brown’s contentious exit.
After spending some time on loan at Salford City, the 29-year-old left-back was released by Bolton Wanderers in the summer and now plays for St Mirren.
With Saints manager Steven Robinson pressing John to leave a lasting impression, it will now be up to the former Rangers defender to secure a longer-term deal in Paisley.
Robinson stated on the official St. Mirren website, “Declan is here on a short-term deal with a view to extending depending on how it goes.”
We don’t have enough defence coverage because of the situation we’re in. Declan brings a wealth of experience to the table. We are quite fortunate to have been able to bring him in since he has played at some very high levels and has clearly been up in Scotland previously.
“During his initial few days of instruction, we have observed his quality. He is a gifted young man with excellent technical skills, but we need to look into why he hasn’t played much football lately and try to get him up to speed.
“I think we are really fortunate at this point in the season to have Declan join the team with his calibre and experience.”
On December 26, Rangers will visit St Mirren as part of their Scottish Premiership obligations, then on February 22, St Mirren will visit Rangers once more.
It implies that if John wants to rejoin Rangers the following season, he will have to get a longer-term deal with St Mirren. The former GERS player is “delighted” to be returning to Scotland.
Declan John is returning to Scotland for the first time since leaving Rangers in the summer of 2018 to sign an £800k contract with Swansea City.
However, the defender south of the border has not had success. While at Swansea, John was loaned to Sunderland and then Bolton before relocating to the Trotters permanently in 2021.
Declan John, who is now back in Scotland with St Mirren, says he is “absolutely delighted” to be ending up in Paisley and is committed to making an impact with the Saints. John declared, “I’m so happy to be here.” “These days have been really hectic.
“I arrived on Thursday, worked out on Friday, and went to the game on Saturday, which saw the guys win handily. I have thoroughly loved it, and I am eager to resume my training.
“Everything has been so happy once I walked in, and the changing room reflects that. It seems like such a pleasant place to be.
