End of an era: All Blacks aim to honour Cane and Perenara in Turin finale

As they get ready for their final Test of 2024 against Italy in Turin on Sunday (NZT), the team is thinking about saying goodbye to two important members of the All Blacks: halfback TJ Perenara and flanker Sam Cane.

According to centre Rieko Ioane, the team is motivated to make sure the two can finish their Test careers with a strong showing.

“Their legacy and the imprint they have left on this shirt are astounding. Many individuals have been inspired by them. Both of them have been doing it for a very long time. Honouring them with a performance is a fantastic way to see them out.

For Ioane, who made his Test debut against Italy eight years ago, the match is also important.

“I was extremely young then, and eager, and that hunger and passion hasn’t changed.”

“The All Blacks want to end the season with a victory,” he stated. After reflecting on their defeat to France, they are now resolved to end as strongly as they began.

“We’re focused solely on the performance and that comes from a great week’s preparation which we have had so far.”

He claimed that the team had grown significantly throughout the season.

“Ensuring that we can honour our departing players is the main concern of everyone. This will be the group’s final gathering. However, that depends on our performance on Saturday and how well we prepare.

According to Ioane, football is the most popular sport in Turin, which is not a rugby city. The facilities of one of the greatest club teams in the world of football impressed a number of team members who paid a visit to Juventus’ home field.

However, he claimed that the All Blacks had been identified when they were in the city.

“With such rich [football] history, you don’t expect too many people to realise who the All Blacks are, but it’s always nice taking photos with fans.”

Wing Mark Tele’a, who will play once his hand injury that prevented him from playing in the France Test has healed, said that seeing Turin has been an amazing experience. He and other team members enjoyed touring the city’s commercial district and saw chapels they had only seen in films.

The weather could have been better, though.

“It has been quite cold. Yesterday was sunny, but it should be chilly when we play.
