Lewis Ferguson’s big Bologna milestone ends in despair as Scotland stars involved in Champions League drama

A Scotland star has reached a new injury recovery milestone.

Lewis Ferguson, a midfielder for Scotland, played his first ninety minutes in over six months, but he was unable to lead Bologna to victory over Lille in the Champions League.

Following surgery for a knee ailment in April, Ferguson has been gradually returning to full fitness. Manager Vincenzo Italiano brought him back into the Bologna starting lineup for their match against the French Ligue 1 team at the Stadio Renato Dell’Ara.

Ferguson managed to play the entire game while wearing the captain’s armband, but Lille attacker Ngalayel Mukau’s two goals stunned the 25-year-old and his teammates, and Jhon Lucumi’s goal for Bologna briefly tied the score.

With just one point from five Champions League games thus far, the Italian Serie A team is in danger of being eliminated.

John McGinn and Andy Robertson, the captain of the national team, were also playing in glamorous fixtures on Tuesday, so Ferguson wasn’t the only Scotland international residing outside of the Premiership.

Robertson was there in the middle of the action as Liverpool defeated Real Madrid 2-0 at Anfield. He gave up a penalty that Kylian Mbappe missed and then helped Cody Gakpo with a precise cross. At 15 points, Arne Slot is at the top of the standings.

Morgan Rogers’ goal in stoppage time was disallowed as McGinn led Aston Villa to a 0-0 home draw against Juventus at Villa Park. With ten points, Unai Emery’s team is currently ranked ninth in the standings.
