Angus Gunn has become the latest Norwich City player to face charges from the FA following allegations of misconduct during the team’s 3-0 defeat to QPR earlier this month.
This comes after Norwich captain Kenny McLean received a retrospective four-match ban for violent conduct against QPR’s Kieran Morgan. Now, the Scotland international goalkeeper has been accused of “acting in an improper manner around the tunnel area at half-time” of the same match. Gunn has been given until Thursday, December 19, to respond to the charge.
The incident reportedly stems from Gunn’s frustration during the build-up to QPR’s second goal, when he was challenged by winger Paul Smyth. Referee Anthony Backhouse did not call a foul, and moments later, Rayan Kolli scored, prompting protests from the Norwich keeper.
The FA issued a statement confirming the charge:
“Angus Gunn has been charged with misconduct following the EFL Championship match between Norwich City and Queens Park Rangers on Saturday, 7 December. The goalkeeper allegedly acted in an improper manner around the tunnel area at half-time of this fixture, and he has until Thursday, 19 December to respond.”
If found guilty, Gunn could face a punishment ranging from a fine to a suspension, potentially impacting his availability for Norwich’s upcoming Championship fixtures. The Canaries are set to travel to Sunderland this weekend.
This charge follows closely on the heels of McLean’s suspension, which was upheld just hours before Norwich’s goalless draw with Portsmouth. The fallout from the QPR match is proving costly for the squad, with the latest development further complicating their campaign.
Norwich manager Jacob Thorup expressed his frustration last week over the handling of McLean’s suspension, criticizing the FA’s decision-making process, which he claimed disrupted the team’s preparations.
“Everyone is disappointed with how this has gone,” Thorup said. “We spend countless hours preparing our players to deliver for our fans, yet we’re met with situations like this that feel unfair.
“I’ve never encountered anything like this in my career. If this is the standard, I expect the same scrutiny to be applied across all teams in the league. Otherwise, it’s not a level playing field.”
The latest charge against Gunn adds to Norwich’s frustrations, with Thorup and the club now left to navigate the fallout from a contentious match that has had far-reaching consequences.
