28-goal former Rangers striker has contract mutually terminated by EFL club after just 46 days

Former Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn has become a free agent after mutually terminating his contract with EFL League One side Northampton Town, just 46 days after signing.

The 34-year-old joined the Cobblers in November and made six appearances for the club. Having been without a team since leaving Derby County at the end of last season, Waghorn is now back on the market following his brief stint at Sixfields.

A key figure during his time at Rangers, Waghorn netted 28 league goals across two seasons after joining on the same day as current captain James Tavernier in 2015. Signed as part of a double deal with Wigan Athletic under manager Mark Warburton, he made an immediate impact by scoring twice on his debut in a 6-2 victory over Hibs in the Scottish Challenge Cup. Waghorn played a vital role in helping Rangers secure promotion to the Scottish Premiership and was named the club’s Players’ Player of the Year before moving to Ipswich Town for £1 million in 2017.

Reflecting on his time in Scotland, Waghorn once described the intensity of Old Firm derbies as unmatched, noting: “The rivalry and the sheer hatred surrounding it, from the build-up to the aftermath, lingers for months.”

After leaving Ibrox, Waghorn’s career included a season at Ipswich, where his performances earned him a £5 million move to Derby County under Frank Lampard. He spent three years at Pride Park before brief spells at Coventry City, Huddersfield Town, and a second stint at Derby last summer.

Northampton caretaker manager Ian Sampson praised Waghorn’s professionalism during his short stay, stating: “Martyn came in and helped us through the last few weeks. All parties have now agreed to terminate the contract. We thank him for his efforts and wish him and his family all the best for the future.”
