Peter Grant believes Jefte should have been sent off during Rangers’ League Cup final against Celtic on Sunday for a foul on Nicolas Kuhn.
The match ended 3-3 after 120 minutes before Rangers lost 5-4 on penalties. The Scottish Football Association later acknowledged that Rangers were wrongly denied a penalty during the game. However, after footage surfaced of Jefte’s studs-up challenge on Kuhn’s leg, Grant argued that this incident has been overlooked. Speaking on Go Radio (17 December, 2:40), he remarked, “No one is talking about Jefte in the first half when it was clearly a red card for the tackle.”
Jefte’s challenge under scrutiny
The first-half challenge could have resulted in Jefte being sent off, potentially leaving Rangers in a difficult position for the remainder of the match. While the Gers were also denied a penalty that might have altered the game’s outcome, Grant insists the controversial foul should not be ignored.
Though the SFA’s admission and apology highlight officiating errors, they do little to change the result. While there’s no guarantee the penalty would have been converted, such errors in a high-stakes match are inexcusable, particularly with VAR in use.
Grant also suggested that Jefte’s tackle could have been punished on another day, further emphasizing the need for accurate decisions in such significant fixtures. Despite this, Rangers can take solace in finishing the game with all 11 players and must now focus on improving their league performances.
