Vaclav Cerny ‘offside’ Rangers goal gripe by Tony Docherty answered as Dundee boss told only ‘mistimed’ moment

The VAR team’s support for the winger in the second half proved to be the game-changing moment.

Vaclav Cerny was “maybe offside” before scoring the Rangers goal, according to Dundee manager Tony Docherty.

However, the Sportscene panel has supported the VAR team during their call at Ibrox, pointing out that Antonio Portales, a defender for Dee, made a mistake in timing during the build-up. After a week filled with discussions regarding the use of video technology after the penalty howler in the Premier Sports Cup loss to Celtic, Philippe Clement’s team managed a tight victory.

The main topic of conversation once more was Cerny, who was pulled down by Liam Scales during the Hampden incident. Before he rounded Trevor Carson to score the game-winning goal on Saturday and put Rangers in second place in the Scottish Premiership, he appeared to have avoided the offside trap at Ibrox. Prior to awarding the strike, Nick Walsh in the VAR room checked the goal against last man Portales.

Docherty reflected on the judgement, telling Sky Sports: “I felt we gave Rangers a good game in the second half when I challenged the guys to be a little braver in possession. The fact that we lost the goal truly disappoints me.

I haven’t seen it return. Perhaps it was offside, I thought. I’m not sure. It is clear that they have examined it and that it supports the VAR ruling.

However, the boss’s argument was not being heard by the Sportscene panel. When reflecting on the Cerny strike and VAR check, James McFadden stated: “You expose yourself at the back when you put that many bodies forward. Cerny is beginning to perform at her very best.

“Is this where Portales should drop off?” Neil McCann interrupted. “You are asking for more bodies forward when you consider how deep they were in the first half,” McFadden retorted.

Regarding the defender’s move, Stephen Thompson added, “You can see what he is trying to do, he just mistimes it horribly.” “He does,” concluded McFadden. So they are the snap decisions you make.
