Borja Sainz sends message to Norwich City players and supporters after blow confirmed

Norwich City midfielder Borja Sainz has apologized to fans and teammates after being handed a six-match suspension by the FA for a spitting incident during the Championship loss to Sunderland.

Sainz, who has been a standout performer this season with 15 goals and three assists in 26 league matches, has played a crucial role in Norwich’s push for a top-six finish. His clinical finishing and ability to create chances have been pivotal in the Canaries’ attacking success.

However, the 23-year-old will now miss the next month of action, having accepted the ban and a £12,000 fine for his actions. This leaves Norwich without their most influential player for a critical stretch of fixtures.

Borja Sainz issues an apology

According to Pink Un, Norwich will not contest the decision, meaning Sainz will sit out key matches against Sheffield United, Leeds United, Watford, Swansea City, and Derby County, returning on February 11 for the clash with Preston North End.

Through the club’s official channels, Sainz expressed regret:

“Following today’s FA decision, I want to offer a sincere and public apology for my actions during the Sunderland match. Spitting at an opponent is completely out of character for me, and my behavior was unacceptable. I deeply regret it and take full responsibility.

“I want to apologize directly to Chris Mepham and also to my teammates, coaching staff, and fans. I’m disappointed in myself and for letting everyone down. While I’ll miss the upcoming games, I’ll use this time to reflect, learn, and come back stronger to help the team in the remainder of the season.”

Norwich’s promotion hopes take a hit

Sainz’s absence is a significant blow to Norwich’s play-off aspirations. With tough matches ahead against several promotion contenders, the Canaries face an uphill battle, especially as they are also without star striker Josh Sargent.

The lack of attacking firepower could see Norwich struggle to secure points in these crucial games, potentially derailing their season’s progress. The timing of the suspension risks undoing much of the team’s hard work, leaving the squad and fans hoping the damage won’t be too severe by the time Sainz returns.
