Girona Target Norwich City Star Borja Sainz
Norwich City forward Borja Sainz has caught the attention of Spanish club Girona, who are currently competing in the Champions League. According to Fichajes, Girona have added Sainz to their list of transfer targets as they push for another season in European football. The La Liga side, sitting seventh in the league, are chasing Mallorca and Villarreal for a European qualification spot.
Sainz, who joined Norwich at just 22 ahead of the 2023/24 season from Turkish side Giresunspor, has become a vital player for the Canaries. Despite being an under-the-radar signing, he quickly proved his worth, delivering consistent performances in his debut campaign. Now in his second season, Sainz has stepped up further, emerging as a key figure in Norwich’s promotion bid under manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Statistics underline Sainz’s influence. According to FotMob, no player in the league has contributed to more goals after 26 matches, surpassing Finn Azaz by one. His creative flair, ball-carrying ability, and eye for goal have been instrumental for Norwich this season. With 19 goal contributions in all competitions, including a standout hat-trick against Derby County, the 23-year-old is a pivotal force on the Canaries’ left flank.
Such form has naturally attracted suitors, with Girona reportedly preparing a bid. Norwich is expected to demand a fee in the range of €20–25 million should they consider selling Sainz, either in January or during the summer transfer window. Athletic Club has also been linked with the former Real Zaragoza winger.
Despite his impressive season, Sainz has faced setbacks, including a six-match suspension for spitting at Sunderland’s Chris Mepham in December, an incident that also earned him a £12,000 fine from the Football Association. Nonetheless, Norwich fans regard him as one of the league’s top talents, believing he has the potential to become a star at the highest level.
Retaining Sainz could be crucial for Norwich’s promotion aspirations, but with Girona and other clubs circling, they may face a tough battle to keep their prized asset.
