Sunderland Eyeing Move for Stoke City Striker Tom Cannon
Sunderland are actively seeking to strengthen their squad this month, with a new striker high on their priority list. The Black Cats are firmly in the Championship title race but will need to match the ambitious recruitment efforts of their promotion rivals to sustain their push.
Manager Regis Le Bris has already secured Enzo Le Fée on loan, but the team’s next target is clear: more firepower in attack. Now, it appears Sunderland are closing in on one of the league’s most prolific forwards, though they face stiff competition.
Sunderland Compete for Tom Cannon
According to Alan Nixon on Patreon, Sunderland are among several Championship clubs interested in Leicester City striker Tom Cannon. Currently on loan at Stoke City, Cannon’s agreement includes a break clause that allows Leicester to recall him and potentially send him to another club. The clause, set to expire on Wednesday, has drawn interest from Sunderland, Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday, and Luton Town.
Nixon revealed:
“Sunderland are keen on a deal for Cannon, exploring a loan-to-buy option. Sheffield Wednesday and Luton have also made inquiries, but Sunderland and Sheffield United may be able to offer a permanent move during negotiations.”
Sheffield United’s pursuit of Cannon may hinge on Oli McBurnie’s potential return from Las Palmas, leaving Sunderland in a strong position. Cannon, who turned down Sunderland in the summer to join Stoke, has since impressed, scoring 11 goals and twice finding the net against the Black Cats in recent fixtures.
Is Sunderland a Good Fit for Cannon?
Cannon’s potential move to Sunderland raises questions about his role at the club. Currently thriving as Stoke’s main striker with consistent game time, the 11-goal forward might hesitate to risk reduced minutes at Sunderland, where Wilson Isidor is the leading man in attack.
From Leicester City’s perspective, pulling Cannon from Stoke, where he’s flourishing, might impact his development and market value. However, Sunderland’s serious promotion aspirations could make the move enticing.
While a switch to the Stadium of Light could reduce his game time, it also offers the prospect of a permanent deal and the chance to play a key role in a title-chasing side. For Sunderland, securing a proven goal-scorer like Cannon could be the difference in their quest for Premier League football.
