The Jets might owe Jerry Jones a thank-you.
The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly decided to part ways with head coach Mike McCarthy after five seasons. This surprising move could inadvertently help the New York Jets in their pursuit of a top coaching candidate.
Although the Jets are unlikely to show interest in McCarthy, despite his ties to Aaron Rodgers from their Green Bay Packers days, the veteran coach is expected to draw attention from other teams, including the New Orleans Saints. Saints insider Nick Underhill reports that New Orleans is “very interested” in McCarthy now that his contract has ended, a claim supported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who labeled McCarthy a “strong candidate” for the Saints on The Pat McAfee Show.
How McCarthy’s Exit Could Help the Jets Secure Aaron Glenn
The Jets initially identified Mike Vrabel as their preferred head coach candidate, but with Vrabel headed to New England, their focus has shifted to Detroit Lions defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn. Glenn, who has longstanding ties to the Jets organization, is widely regarded as one of the team’s top options alongside Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores.
Glenn also has a strong connection to the Saints, where he served as defensive backs coach from 2016 to 2020 and remains well-regarded. Many around the league believe that, given the choice between the Jets and Saints—both considered less desirable head coach vacancies—Glenn would opt for a return to New Orleans.
However, with the Saints now expected to pursue McCarthy, the Jets’ chances of landing Glenn could improve. The ripple effect of Jerry Jones’ decision to move on from McCarthy may indirectly benefit the Jets, clearing a path for Glenn, their former cornerback, to take the reins in New York.
