Sunderland have frequently found themselves searching for strikers in the transfer market, and a recent double update on potential departures might elevate signing a new forward to the top of Kristjaan Speakman’s agenda as the transfer deadline looms.
While Wilson Isidor’s goals have provided relief for Sunderland’s long-standing striker concerns, depth remains a pressing issue. Isidor and Aaron Connolly are currently the only two experienced first-team forwards available to head coach Régis Le Bris.
However, reports now suggest that Millwall are targeting Connolly for a January move, a development that could leave Sunderland scrambling for reinforcements before the window closes. The Black Cats have already been linked with several names, including Ben Brereton Díaz, though Sheffield United appear to be leading that race. Another potential target is long-term interest Tom Cannon, currently earning £8,000 per week at Leicester City, according to Capology.
Trey Ogunsuyi Departure Could Shape Sunderland’s January Plans
Sunderland’s striker situation is further complicated by Trey Ogunsuyi’s potential loan departure before deadline day. The Liverpool-linked forward made his senior debut against Stoke last weekend, but with no immediate plans to integrate him into the first team, Le Bris may allow the youngster to gain experience elsewhere.
If both Connolly and Ogunsuyi exit in January, Sunderland will almost certainly be forced into the market to add to their attacking ranks. However, securing a suitable replacement is easier said than done. The club cannot afford to rely solely on Isidor for the remainder of the campaign, and with new names continuing to emerge, all eyes might turn to Cannon as Speakman’s primary focus.
Sunderland’s Door to Tom Cannon May Open Amid Leicester Update
Sunderland’s interest in Cannon dates back to the summer of 2023 when he joined Leicester City from Everton in a £7.5 million deal. After limited opportunities with the Foxes in 2023/24, the 22-year-old moved to Stoke City on loan, where he has since impressed with nine goals in 22 Championship appearances, as well as a recent strike in Stoke’s FA Cup win over Sunderland.
Leicester manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has hinted at a possible January move for Cannon, stating:
“He’s one on the list for us. We keep a close eye on him. Tom’s situation is closely assessed. There are decisions to be made on that. It’s still a possibility [he stays at Stoke]. But we’re looking at what is best for his situation and what is best for the club.”
With Connolly and Ogunsuyi potentially on their way out and Cannon’s future uncertain, Sunderland could make a strong push to secure the Irish forward. Adding Cannon would not only address their striker depth but also enhance their promotion prospects, following the impactful loan signing of Enzo Le Fée.
