Austrian defender Michael Steinwender is on the verge of joining Hearts, with his transfer to Tynecastle expected to be finalized within the week.
The 24-year-old is set to arrive in Edinburgh over the weekend to undergo a medical after Hearts agreed on a six-figure fee with his Swedish club, IFK Varnamo.
Personal terms are nearly agreed, with only minor details left to resolve. Steinwender is expected to sign a long-term deal in Gorgie, provided he passes his medical. A UK work permit will also be required before he can officially begin his career with Hearts. The club is hopeful the paperwork will be completed in time for him to debut against Kilmarnock on Saturday, January 25.
Steinwender, who has made over 100 top-flight appearances, is bidding farewell to Varnamo, where he moved in a £250,000 transfer last year. Previously, he played for Austrian clubs Mattersburg, St. Pölten, and Hartberg. Standing 6ft 3in tall, he is a quick and athletic right-footed centre-back with international experience at under-18 and under-19 levels for Austria. He will compete for a starting spot alongside Craig Halkett, particularly while Frankie Kent recovers from a quad injury.
In related news, Hearts confirmed the departure of Australian defender Kye Rowles, who has joined MLS side DC United in a £600,000 deal. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Zander Clark has committed his future to the club, signing a contract extension until 2027 despite interest from Hibs.
