Norwich City’s injury problems deepened after Marcelino Nunez was forced off during their FA Cup match against Brighton.

With several other midfielders already sidelined, a January loan move to address the crisis is now a strong possibility.

The Chilean midfielder has endured a tough season with injuries, having missed time earlier in the campaign. Canaries boss Johannes Hoff Thorup is already managing without four other midfielders, with the absence of new signing Anis Ben Slimane being particularly significant.

Injuries to Liam Gibbs and Gabriel Forsyth have further depleted Norwich’s midfield options, leaving the squad stretched thin. A January reinforcement wasn’t initially planned, but the mounting injuries have left Thorup and sporting director Ben Knapper with little choice.

Nunez’s Absence a Major Setback

Nunez, 24, has established himself as a key creative force for Norwich. His performances have even drawn interest from Premier League side Everton, whose reported £7 million bid was rejected. Under Thorup, Nunez has excelled in the number six role, where he plays a pivotal part in transitioning play from defense to attack.

Thorup praised Nunez’s versatility, noting his ability to excel in deeper roles and as an attacking threat. “When he’s in a more offensive position, he’s a big threat from distance,” Thorup said, highlighting that three of Nunez’s four goals this season have come from outside the box.

With Nunez potentially facing a lengthy spell out, Norwich faces a significant challenge to fill the creative void he leaves behind.

Midfield Reinforcements on the Agenda

Norwich’s midfield has been plagued by injuries all season, and the latest blow to Nunez has heightened the urgency to address the issue. While a loan signing in January seems like the logical move, Thorup remains cautious about the club’s options. He is “realistic” about the challenges of finding the right player in the short window available.

The emergence of Amankwah Forson could provide a glimmer of hope, with Thorup potentially turning to younger players to fill the gaps. However, should Nunez’s injury require an extended recovery period, the club may feel compelled to act in the transfer market. For now, Norwich’s ability to navigate this crisis will hinge on both their existing resources and a bit of much-needed luck.
