The transfer window shuts at 11 p.m. on Monday.
Hearts head coach Neil Critchley acknowledged that the club is still actively searching for potential signings ahead of Monday’s deadline. However, he expressed satisfaction with the business done so far, having secured the signings of Elton Kabangu, Jamie McCart, Michael Steinwender, and Sander Kartum.
“I’m pleased with what we’ve done so far and the work we’ve put in,” Critchley said. “I believe we’ve strengthened the squad. I don’t want to make any promises, but we’re still looking. If we can improve the squad, we will. Nothing is imminent right now, but given the timeframe—it’s Friday, and the window closes on Monday—anything that happens will have to move quickly. We’ll see what unfolds.”
The club is considering attacking reinforcements, but new arrivals are not contingent on players leaving. “Yes, we can still add to the squad if we feel it’s the right move for the team or the club,” Critchley explained. “When you step back and look at the transfer activity, you realize how much movement there’s been in terms of players coming in and going out. We’re still working on it and discussing it, but we also have an important match to prepare for.”
There have been inquiries about certain Hearts players, with Yutaro Oda and Barrie McKay attracting interest. While Critchley did not name anyone specifically, he confirmed that discussions had taken place. “Yes, there’s been some interest in players. Some inquiries are more concrete than others, while some are just speculation and rumors. We’ve had a couple of approaches, but nothing at the stage where we expect anyone to leave at this moment.”
Hearts travel to Dens Park to face Dundee on Saturday, with a chance to break into the Premiership’s top six if results go their way. Austrian defender Steinwender and Norwegian midfielder Kartum could make their debuts, having been left out of last week’s win over Kilmarnock to focus on fitness.
“They’re getting closer,” said Critchley. “They’ve trained all week and are improving every day. We’ve done physical tests to assess their readiness, and now it’s about making the right decision—whether they start or come off the bench. Michael and Sander’s situations differ depending on squad availability.”
With Craig Halkett, Frankie Kent, and Stephen Kingsley all sidelined, along with Daniel Oyegoke’s move to Hellas Verona and Kye Rowles’ transfer to DC United, Steinwender may be fast-tracked into the squad.
Another potential addition to the matchday squad is Australian midfielder Calem Nieuwenhof, who is nearing a return after almost 11 months out with a hamstring injury. “He’s been training and played 70 minutes in a behind-closed-doors game last week, performing well. Calem is in contention,” Critchley confirmed.
