Patrick Roberts’ Sunderland Journey: From Man City Prospect to Wearside Fan Favorite

When Manchester City signed an 18-year-old Patrick Roberts in 2015, many believed the young winger was destined for greatness. However, his career took an unpredictable turn.

Following eight loan spells across Europe, League One side Sunderland took a chance on the former Fulham starlet, offering him an initial six-month contract. Fast forward three years, and Roberts remains a key figure at the Stadium of Light, proving that the decision to bring him in was a shrewd move by the club.

Sunderland’s Gamble on Roberts Paid Off

The deal to bring Roberts to the North East was a clever one from Sunderland’s management. If the move didn’t pan out, the short-term nature of the contract meant the club had no long-term obligations.

It’s hard to imagine that Roberts spent seven years on Manchester City’s books, making just three senior appearances. With City boasting an array of world-class talent, the winger found himself sent on multiple loan spells across Europe—an experience that likely hindered his ability to settle and develop consistently.

There was never any doubt about Roberts’ talent. During his standout season in Scotland, he tallied 9 goals and 14 assists, but he struggled to replicate that form in subsequent moves. League One, however, provided the perfect stage for Roberts to rediscover his confidence. His performances quickly gained traction, and he played a crucial role in Sunderland’s successful play-off campaign.

Roberts’ impact was enough to earn him a two-year contract extension in 2022 as the Black Cats prepared for their return to the Championship.

A Key Figure at the Stadium of Light

Reflecting on Roberts’ time at Sunderland brings a sense of pride and joy to the club’s supporters. The 27-year-old has become a beloved figure on Wearside, with fans consistently backing him, even through difficult spells.

Sunderland’s first season back in the Championship in 2022 saw Roberts deliver some of his best performances, particularly forming a dynamic partnership with Amad Diallo under Tony Mowbray’s management.

It hasn’t always been smooth sailing for Roberts, and he has faced criticism at times. However, that criticism comes from the belief among fans that they know just how good he can be.

This season, Roberts seems to have hit top form once again, thriving under Regis Le Bris’ fluid, attacking style of play. As Sunderland have continued to evolve since their League One days, Roberts has remained a constant, performing reliably through the club’s transition.

While Roberts was once tipped for a higher level than Championship football, credit must be given to the winger for his perseverance and finding a club where he feels at home.

Now, with a settled role and consistent performances, Roberts has his sights firmly set on the Premier League—a stage where he undoubtedly has unfinished business.
