Michael Gannon Urges Rangers to Secure Permanent Deal for Vaclav Cerny

Michael Gannon has expressed his support for Rangers to finalize the permanent signing of current loanee Vaclav Cerny after the Czech winger’s impressive performances at Ibrox.

Cerny has been a standout player for the Light Blues this season, consistently delivering strong displays. However, unless a deal is struck, he is set to return to his parent club, Wolfsburg, at the end of his loan spell this summer.

Gannon believes Rangers should make every effort to secure Cerny’s services on a long-term basis, even if it requires a significant financial commitment. Reports suggest Wolfsburg are willing to part ways with the winger for around £6.75 million, largely due to financial challenges faced by their parent company, Volkswagen (Scottish Sun, 1 February, pg 69).

Writing in his Sunday Mail column (2 February, pg 62), Gannon stated: “Sometimes, peace of mind comes at a price. If Rangers can raise the £6.75 million needed to sign Vaclav Cerny permanently, fans will certainly sleep easier knowing he’s staying put. The fact that Wolfsburg’s owners, Volkswagen, are facing financial difficulties and would accept that fee should be viewed as fantastic news.”

Rangers Should Prioritize Cerny’s Retention

While Rangers are actively looking to strengthen their squad, keeping key players is just as crucial—and Cerny has proven to be one of the club’s most valuable assets.

Since joining, the Czech international has been instrumental in the team’s success and has played a key role in maintaining Philippe Clement’s position as manager. Cerny’s remarkable contribution of 20 goals and assists across all competitions highlights his impact, making him an indispensable part of the squad.

Although Hamza Igamane’s influence has also been significant, Cerny’s consistency and attacking prowess have made him a fan favorite and a vital component of Rangers’ ambitions. Securing his permanent transfer would not only solidify their attacking options but also reduce the number of concerns heading into the summer transfer window—a period expected to be busy as the club looks to strengthen its squad to compete with Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title.

While Ibrox may be set for a partial rebuild, ensuring stability through the retention of key players like Cerny is essential. His continued presence would be a major step toward achieving the club’s long-term goals, and making his move permanent should be a top priority for Rangers’ management.
