Rangers Set to Offer John Souttar a New Long-Term Deal, Says Barry Ferguson
Rangers are expected to offer John Souttar a new long-term contract soon, according to former Ibrox midfielder Barry Ferguson.
Ferguson believes the club will move quickly to secure the defender’s future, with his current deal set to expire next year. Souttar has been a key figure under manager Philippe Clement this season, featuring regularly before being sidelined by injury.
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show (3 February), Ferguson stated: “I’m confident Rangers will look to tie [Souttar] down to a longer contract. He’s approaching the final year of his deal, and I’m sure the club is keen to keep him for the long term.”
Rangers to Open Contract Talks with Souttar
With Souttar’s contract nearing its final year, Rangers will need to open discussions in the coming months to avoid uncertainty over his future during the summer transfer window.
The 28-year-old has been one of the standout performers in the Gers’ backline this season, and his consistent displays could attract interest from English clubs as he reaches the peak of his career.
Clement has likely recognised Souttar’s importance to the team, especially after being forced to rely on Robin Propper and Clinton Nsiala due to the squad’s injury woes.
As Rangers aim to mount a stronger challenge against Celtic next season, retaining key players like Souttar will be crucial. Currently trailing their Old Firm rivals by 10 points, the Gers face an uphill battle to reclaim the Premiership title this season.
While financial pressures could tempt the club to cash in on Souttar, allowing him to enter the final year of his contract would reduce his market value. Offering him a new deal would not only secure his services for the future but also protect Rangers’ financial interests.
