Rangers Eye Potential Steven Gerrard Return Amid Managerial Search
Rangers are once again in the market for a new permanent manager, and former Ibrox boss Steven Gerrard has emerged as a potential candidate.
Gerrard remains a highly respected figure in Govan after guiding the club to their first Scottish Premiership title since liquidation, completing an unbeaten 2020/21 campaign with 102 points and conceding just 13 goals.
Following Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to St Mirren, Philippe Clement and his coaching staff were dismissed—an outcome many Rangers fans had been anticipating. With Barry Ferguson leading an interim team of ex-Rangers players until the end of the season, the club is now focused on securing a long-term successor, with several high-profile names being considered.
Potential Hurdle in Rangers’ Pursuit of Gerrard
Given his past success at Ibrox, it’s no surprise that Gerrard’s name has been mentioned alongside David Wagner as a potential candidate for the role. However, according to talkSPORT (24 February), while a move for Gerrard is possible, it is more likely to happen in the summer.
This is primarily due to tax-related complications following his recent departure from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in January, which could prevent him from taking on a new job before April.
Gerrard as the Ideal Candidate for a Revamped Rangers
Although Gerrard could technically be available from April, bringing him in at that stage of the season—with little left to play for—would not be a strategic move. Instead, waiting until the summer to make a carefully considered appointment seems the more logical approach, particularly as Rangers could be under new ownership by then.
American investment group 49ers Enterprises is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire a majority stake in the club, with Leeds United chairman Paraag Marathe leading negotiations. Given the 49ers’ approach at Leeds—where they appointed Daniel Farke due to his track record of earning promotion—Rangers fans may see a similar strategy unfold at Ibrox.
If the new ownership prioritizes experience in winning the Scottish Premiership, there would be no better candidate than Gerrard to lead Rangers into a new era.
