Ferguson’s Debut as Rangers Boss Ends in Victory

Barry Ferguson overcame a difficult start to secure a win in his first match in charge of Rangers against Kilmarnock.

The former club captain endured a tough opening half-hour at Rugby Park on 26 February, with his team struggling and trailing by two goals. However, they staged an impressive comeback to claim a 4-2 victory.

With little time on the training pitch to work with his squad, Ferguson must now turn his attention to a quick turnaround, as Rangers prepare to host Motherwell at a lively Ibrox on Saturday, 1 March.

Ferguson on Taking the Rangers Job: ‘Crazy to Turn It Down’

Ferguson stepped in to replace Philippe Clement following a dismal defeat to St Mirren at Ibrox, which ultimately brought an end to the Belgian’s tenure after a period of mounting pressure.

A beloved figure in Govan, the former midfielder—who made 431 appearances for the Light Blues—shared his thoughts on his return to management after the dramatic win.

Speaking on Sky Sports alongside Kris Boyd, Steven Davis, James McFadden, and host Eilidh Barbour, Ferguson admitted the past few days had been surreal.

“I didn’t expect to return to management, to be honest,” the 47-year-old said. “I was enjoying my role as an ambassador—definitely less stressful. But when the opportunity came, I knew I’d be crazy to turn it down.”

Ferguson has signed a contract until the end of the season, giving the club’s board time to assess their long-term plans while also allowing him to stake his claim for the job permanently.

A Rollercoaster Start for Ferguson

Rangers fans have experienced plenty of highs and lows in recent years, and their victory over Kilmarnock was a reflection of that unpredictability.

The first 30 minutes were disastrous, prompting Ferguson to make an early statement by substituting defender Clinton Nsiala. Kilmarnock could have extended their lead, but after that shaky start, they barely threatened, while Rangers seized control and eventually cruised to victory.

While domestic fixtures will continue to test Ferguson’s side, European competition presents an even greater challenge, with Fenerbahce awaiting in the knockout rounds. However, this experience will be invaluable for both the manager and his squad.

If Ferguson navigates the challenges ahead successfully, he could strengthen his case for a long-term role at Rangers or boost his prospects for future managerial opportunities elsewhere.
