Norwich City Sporting Director Provides Key Contract Updates on Star Midfielders
Norwich City sporting director Ben Knapper has shared significant contract updates regarding two key players in the Canaries’ squad, describing one as “brilliant” and the other as a “lion,” according to a new report.
Latest Norwich City Updates
The Canaries are set to return to action on Saturday with a lunchtime clash against Blackburn Rovers. Ahead of the fixture, head coach Johannes Hoff Thorup provided an important team update.
Midfielder Kenny McLean will miss the game at Ewood Park due to illness, but the club is optimistic about his return for their next match against Oxford United. Meanwhile, forward Lewis Dobbin, who was substituted at halftime against Stoke City, will still be part of the matchday squad.
Thorup also shared his thoughts on in-form striker Josh Sargent, who has netted three goals in his last two appearances. The Norwich boss emphasized the need for the USA international to stay consistently involved in matches, stating: “He can be out of the game for periods, and we want him to push a bit more to always be involved. When he is involved, he’s such a big threat.”
Norwich City in Contract Talks with Sainz and Núñez
As Norwich prepares for their upcoming fixture, Knapper has confirmed to Pink Un that contract discussions are ongoing with Borja Sainz and Marcelino Núñez. Despite growing interest from clubs across Europe, the Canaries remain composed about securing the futures of the midfield duo.
With both players entering the final 18 months of their contracts, Norwich is working proactively to ensure their long-term stay. By the summer, the pair will be down to just 12 months remaining on their deals, making their contract situations a pressing matter.
“There are ongoing conversations in both cases. We’ve had good discussions with their representatives, and those talks will continue. These things take time, as it’s about finding alignment between all parties. There’s no definitive conclusion yet,” Knapper explained.
“As the season unfolds and we see where we stand regarding the play-offs and the possibility of being in a different division next year, that will naturally influence decisions, particularly from the players’ perspectives. These are active discussions, but we’re approaching them with a sense of calm. We will react accordingly and ensure the best outcome for the club, whatever the situation.”
Sainz, praised as “brilliant” by Thorup this season, has featured in 29 Championship matches, starting every game he has been available for. Meanwhile, Núñez, described as a “lion” by former Norwich manager David Wagner, has made 22 appearances, missing just two starts in the league.
Both players have been instrumental in Norwich’s campaign, contributing with goals and assists. However, their willingness to commit to new deals may hinge on the club’s promotion prospects, with Norwich currently sitting four points outside the play-off spots.
