Rangers Encouraged to Appoint David Weir as New Sporting Director

Rangers have been urged to consider Brighton & Hove Albion’s David Weir for the vacant sporting director role.

Weir, who finished his playing career at Ibrox, has spent the past six years working behind the scenes with the Premier League club. The 54-year-old is a sought-after figure, having also been linked with Everton for a similar position.

Rangers Seeking a Sporting Director

Earlier this month, chief executive Patrick Stewart confirmed that the club is actively looking to appoint a sporting director, allowing Nils Koppen to focus solely on player recruitment. Given Weir’s extensive experience at Brighton and his deep ties to Rangers, he is seen as a natural fit for the role.

However, with Everton and other English top-flight clubs reportedly interested, securing Weir’s services would be a significant coup for Rangers.

Derek Ferguson Backs Weir for the Role

With 49ers Enterprises nearing a takeover at Rangers, Derek Ferguson—the brother of current manager Barry Ferguson—believes the club should set its sights high.

“The name that stands out for this role is David Weir,” Ferguson told Ibrox News. “He’s done a fantastic job at Brighton and is an obvious candidate. It’s a smart decision by the club to bring in a sporting director because Koppen has been juggling too many responsibilities.”

Financial Boost Could Help Rangers Secure a High-Profile Appointment

Many believe Rangers’ delay in sacking Philippe Clement stemmed from financial constraints. However, after news emerged that the 49ers were pushing for a takeover, Clement’s departure quickly followed.

Ferguson believes the financial backing from the 49ers could play a key role in attracting a top-tier appointment.

“It all comes down to finances. Rangers haven’t been in a strong financial position to bring in a sporting director,” he added. *”But with new investment on the horizon, the club can ease the burden on Koppen and allow him to focus on recruitment.

David Weir would be my first choice, but would he return? If the 49ers take over, who knows? If there’s a will, there’s a way.”*
