Jack Butland came under heavy criticism as Rangers suffered a humiliating 2-1 defeat to Motherwell on Saturday.
The goalkeeper was at the center of yet another costly mistake at Ibrox, following similar errors earlier in the season, including against Manchester United.
Barry Ferguson’s side was left trailing early on, and BBC Sportsound’s Kenny Macintyre was in disbelief as footage from Ibrox reached the studio.
Butland Blasted for Costly Error in Motherwell Opener
Rangers fans have been demanding changes for months, but even after Philippe Clement’s departure, the same issues persist under Ferguson.
Despite an encouraging comeback win over Kilmarnock in his first game, Rangers delivered another lackluster display against Motherwell.
Butland failed to hold a weak shot directed straight at him, allowing Luke Armstrong to pounce on the rebound. Although the offside flag initially denied the goal, VAR overturned the decision.
Reacting live on BBC Radio Scotland (1 March, 15:12), Macintyre was stunned:
“It’s a horrendous mistake by Jack Butland. Jack Butland, what on earth are you doing there?”
Rangers Must Improve Ahead of Fenerbahce Clash
The 2024/25 season has been a disaster for Rangers, and many at Ibrox—whether fans or figures like chief executive Patrick Stewart—will be eager to put it behind them.
With a significant gap behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership and an embarrassing Scottish Cup exit to Queen’s Park, Rangers’ campaign has been nothing short of disastrous.
Their Europa League journey continues, but given recent performances, hopes of progressing past Fenerbahce—let alone reaching the latter stages—are fading fast.
Ferguson was brought in to salvage a sinking ship, and while there was optimism following the win over Kilmarnock, that hope has likely been shattered once again.
Only time will tell what the future holds, but right now, Rangers’ prospects look uncertain at best.
