Rangers Players Face Summer Overhaul After Shock Defeat to Motherwell

Rangers players have been put on notice following their unexpected 2-1 loss to Motherwell, marking a disappointing home debut for Barry Ferguson as manager (1 March). The defeat widened Celtic’s lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership to 16 points, leaving serious doubts about the futures of several first-team members beyond this season.

Ibrox Clear-Out on the Horizon

Following the setback, football pundit David Edgar took to X to suggest that many current Rangers players are already aware they won’t be part of the club’s future under new ownership.

“There’s excitement around the upcoming changes, and we assume the players feel the same,” Edgar wrote. “But in reality, many of them likely know they won’t be here to see it. They look like they’re just running down the clock.”

Ferguson Demands Immediate Improvement

For Ferguson to have a realistic shot at securing the managerial role permanently, he needs the experienced players in the squad to raise their performances—quickly. If Rangers are to salvage any pride from this campaign, a drastic improvement is required.

The Premiership title is all but out of reach, with Celtic expected to comfortably cruise to victory following the struggles under Philippe Clement. Barring a miraculous turnaround, Rangers’ only realistic chance of silverware lies in the Europa League.

They have already impressed against elite opposition, including Manchester United and Tottenham, but now face a tough away fixture against Fenerbahçe before hosting José Mourinho’s side at Ibrox. Should they progress, belief will grow that they can go all the way. However, early elimination would cement this campaign as a failure, increasing the likelihood of the club seeking an external appointment to replace Clement.

The sooner Rangers overhaul their squad and refine their recruitment strategy, the sooner they can begin mounting a serious challenge to Celtic in domestic competitions.
