Eagles Turning Heads After Strange Deal for Pass-Rusher
The Philadelphia Eagles have begun reshaping their roster following an impressive 2024 season that culminated in their second Super Bowl victory.
Throughout their dominant run, few teams could match their star-studded lineup. However, that championship squad is already seeing key departures, with Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, and Mekhi Becton among those moving on.
Unlike last offseason, when they made a splash by signing Saquon Barkley, the Eagles have taken a more measured approach in free agency. While they extended Barkley’s contract and re-signed Zack Baun, they have not pursued major marquee signings.
Instead, Philadelphia has opted to bolster its core with solid, dependable players. One of those additions is Josh Uche, a former second-round pick of the New England Patriots. Uche struggled to establish himself with both the Patriots and the Kansas City Chiefs, but now he has an opportunity to revive his career with the Eagles. The most surprising aspect of his signing is the structure of the deal—Philadelphia inked Uche to a one-year, $1.92 million contract, but they also tacked on four void years to spread out the cap hit, according to NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.
While this cap management strategy is nothing new for general manager Howie Roseman, applying it to such a short-term, low-cost deal is unusual. Still, given Roseman’s track record, it’s difficult to question his methods after last season’s success.
Baun serves as a prime example of the Eagles’ ability to develop talent. Originally a special teams player with the New Orleans Saints, he broke out in 2024, earning All-Pro honors and securing a lucrative contract extension.
While Uche may not experience the same meteoric rise, Philadelphia has a history of maximizing players’ potential. Despite the unconventional structure of his contract, Eagles fans have every reason to trust the front office’s long-term vision.
