Preston North End want to sign Man City player despite £2.3m Norwich City agreement
Preston North End Could Revive Interest in Man City Midfielder Jacob Wright This Summer
Preston North End are considering reigniting their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Jacob Wright in the upcoming transfer window. However, their hopes depend on Norwich City opting against making the teenager’s loan move permanent.
The 19-year-old joined Norwich on loan in February, despite initial reports linking him with a £4 million transfer to Swansea City. That deal ultimately fell through, leading to his temporary switch to Carrow Road. As part of the agreement, Norwich have an option to sign Wright permanently for an initial £2.3 million this summer, provided both the club and player are willing to proceed.
Preston’s Past Interest and Potential Summer Move
Wright attracted significant interest in January, with Preston’s pursuit hinted at by club director Peter Ridsdale. He revealed that North End were once quoted £400,000 for an unnamed Premier League midfielder, who later moved on loan with a £5 million purchase option. This aligns with Wright’s move to Norwich, though he was never explicitly named as a target at the time.
Journalist Alan Nixon has since confirmed that Preston were keen on Wright during the winter window and could reignite their interest in the summer. Their approach hinges on Norwich’s decision—whether they trigger their buy clause or Wright declines the move. So far, the midfielder has made seven appearances for Norwich but was an unused substitute in their recent 2-1 loss to Bristol City, raising questions about his long-term role under manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Should Norwich opt against a permanent deal, Preston boss Paul Heckingbottom is reportedly prepared to make a move, with the club’s FA Cup quarter-final run strengthening their financial position. Nixon reports that any potential transfer fee would likely match Norwich’s £2.3 million option.
Does Preston Need Another Midfielder?
Despite Wright’s talent—having made four senior appearances for Manchester City—Preston may not be in urgent need of midfield reinforcements. Heckingbottom is already set to have Stefan Thordarson, Ben Whiteman, and Ali McCann available next season, with Ryan Ledson’s future yet to be determined. This could mean fierce competition for places, possibly even more than at Norwich.
While Preston may have other priorities in the summer window, Wright remains an attractive prospect due to his potential. However, whether North End make a move will largely depend on Norwich’s next steps.
