I snubbed Celtic to sign for Rangers

The former Rangers striker is making his mark in Sweden after an impressive spell in Anderlecht’s academy

Robbie Ure was pursued by both Rangers and Celtic, but ultimately chose to join Rangers—a decision he made without hesitation.

As a talented young player, Ure, now 21, dreamed of playing for his childhood favorites, yet he has since found success in Europe. The tall striker scored on his debut for Ranger’s first team during a 3-1 League Cup win over Queen of the South in 2022, under Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s leadership. After opting not to accept a contract extension with Rangers, he sought a new challenge in European football with the Belgian club Anderlecht. Ure spent two noteworthy seasons with Anderlecht’s reserve team and made one senior appearance before making headlines by becoming IK Sirius’ record signing for 8 million Krona (approximately £620,000).

Ure quickly justified the investment in him by contributing to his competitive debut with two assists in a 2-1 win against Varnamo. In an interview with Upsala Nya Tidning in Sweden, he explained his choice to join Rangers over Celtic: “Glasgow is my home, and my entire family lives there,” he shared. “When I was younger, I had the chance to choose between Rangers and Celtic, but it wasn’t a hard choice. My family has always supported Rangers, and I was there for ten years.

For me, the rivalry there is the biggest and most intense in the world. Everything is fierce; every league position and match matters immensely to the fans and the club. The bragging rights in the city are what the supporters live for.”
