Angry Rodgers issues transfer warning

Brendan Rodgers did not shy away from expressing his thoughts on Celtic’s 1-0 loss to St Johnstone. An away victory would have positioned Celtic to potentially clinch the title next Saturday at home against Kilmarnock. However, the defeat to an opponent currently struggling at the bottom of the SPFL Premiership has complicated that scenario.

In contrast to last year, when Celtic was on a title-winning streak, they have struggled in the early months of 2025, suffering six losses. This inconsistency has raised concerns for the manager, who highlighted issues with the team’s mentality in his post-match comments—an alarming point for a squad aspiring to complete a treble.

During the January transfer window, Celtic made minimal moves, effectively swapping Kyogo Furuhashi for Jota. While it is clear that Celtic will likely secure this season’s title, Rodgers expressed his frustration and worries about the team’s direction.

The Sun quoted him stating:

“There’s definitely anger, and I’m trying to manage it. We had a poor start today, which has been a recurring theme. This is something we will address, especially in the summer. It’s about mentality.

While this group has mental strength, I’ve been part of teams—especially here—that power through the season until the very end. When you feel comfortable, there’s a tendency to become timid, lose battles, and give up the fight, which is unacceptable for those aspiring to be top players. That’s collectively what’s aggravating.

It’s easy to approach a game thinking it will be straightforward, especially top versus bottom. However, the best players maintain focus from the very beginning.

I’m not merely referring to players like Callum McGregor, who excels under pressure and embraces being the underdog in the Champions League. There’s no doubt that some players seem to approach certain matches looking for an easy ride. That’s the attitude we need to address.

Rodgers acknowledged part of the issue lies with him as well, accepting responsibility for the need for changes. Although he currently has limited options for modifications, his recent remarks may intensify urgency and activity in the summer transfer market for both incoming and outgoing players.
