Hugh Keevins issues £100m+ Rangers takeover update

Rangers are expected to be sold to NFL giants, the San Francisco 49ers, within the coming weeks.

The American consortium is set to hold a majority stake in the Ibrox outfit and a number of shareholders are willing to sell their stake in the club.

A decision also has to be made on who the new manager will be, with Barry Ferguson currently on an interim contract.

Hugh Keevins issues ‘hundreds of millions’ transfer verdict

Hugh Keevins, the Daily Record journalist, has issued a comment on the Gers supporters ahead of the takeover.

In his view, some fans believe that the new owners will be spending hundreds of millions in order to make wholesale changes at Rangers.

He does not see that happening as the difficulties over a long period of time have to first be addressed before the level of spending is established.

Keevins wrote: “This is the danger attached to 49ers Enterprises and their move on Rangers.

“Some supporters genuinely believe hundreds of millions of pounds will be spent on a transformative change.

“It doesn’t work like that when the difficulties that created such a long period of underachievement have to be addressed before the level of spending on the team is established.

“And deciding who’ll be the manager entrusted with recruitment has yet to be negotiated.”

Rangers need some stabilising under the 49ers

In their first year leading Rangers, 49ers Enterprises must prioritise stabilising the club’s financial and operational foundations while laying the groundwork for competitive success.

Initially, they should conduct a thorough audit of Rangers’ £17.2million loss-making finances to address inefficiencies and ensure compliance with Profitability and Sustainability Rules.

Appointing a permanent manager is critical to define the club’s playing identity and recruitment strategy, targeting strategic signings like Vaclav Cerny’s permanent transfer within a modest budget.

Off the pitch, the 49ers should leverage their data-driven NFL expertise to overhaul scouting and analytics, mirroring their Leeds United approach.

Community-focused initiatives, such as developing Ibrox-adjacent fan zones or commercial hubs, can boost local engagement and revenue streams, embedding Rangers at the heart of Glasgow.

Securing Scottish FA approval for their 51 per cent stake, navigating dual-ownership rules with Leeds is essential to assume boardroom control.

This methodical approach, balancing fiscal prudence with targeted investment, will address years of underachievement and position Gers to challenge Celtic’s dominance.
