Jobe Shanahan Set to Make AFL Debut for West Coast in Round 16 Against Collingwood
West Coast Eagles are preparing to introduce another young talent to the AFL stage, with 18-year-old Jobe Shanahan confirmed to make his senior debut in the upcoming Round 16 clash against Collingwood at Marvel Stadium. The versatile recruit, who hails from New South Wales, joins a growing list of debutants for the Eagles in 2025, highlighting the club’s renewed focus on youth development and rebuilding for the future.
Shanahan was selected with Pick 30 in last year’s draft after impressing with the Bendigo Pioneers, the Allies, and during his stint with Essendon’s VFL squad. Standing at 195 cm, the teenager has shown he can be effective at both ends of the ground—offering strong aerial skills and a calm presence whether defending or pushing forward. His ability to impact the contest from multiple positions made him an appealing prospect during the draft, and now he gets his chance at the top level.
The announcement of Shanahan’s debut came in a light-hearted moment during training, when coach Andrew McQualter surprised the squad. As Shanahan stepped up to take a kick, McQualter told him that if he nailed it, he’d be in the team for the weekend. The kick went through, and so did his dream. Reflecting on the moment, Shanahan expressed his excitement and disbelief, sharing how much it meant to have his teammates support him and his family present for the occasion.
This selection marks Shanahan as the seventh new debutant for West Coast this season. He follows in the footsteps of other first-gamers such as Tom Gross, Bo Allan, Sandy Brock, Tom McCarthy, and Hamish Davis, alongside second-year tall Archer Reid. It’s been a big year for fresh faces at the club, as the Eagles continue building a core group of emerging talent.
Shanahan has been in solid form for the WAFL reserves, with his recent game against Peel Thunder standing out—he collected 20 disposals and eight marks. Coach McQualter praised his development, pointing out that Shanahan has delivered his best performances in the past fortnight. While he may come across as relaxed in his body language, McQualter insists Shanahan is a fierce competitor at heart. Fans can catch his long-awaited debut when West Coast face off against Collingwood at 7:35 PM (AEST) this Saturday.
